#worldbreastfeedingweek The first thing I would like to say is just because I promote breastfeeding does not mean I am against formula feeding I promote breastfeeding to help women who choose to breastfeed feel supported, to bring education and awareness around breastfeeding, and to share my personal experience as a mother I believe parents should have the tool of knowledge to make informed decisions I always wanted to breastfeed my children. That didn’t stop thoughts crossing my mind when I was pregnant doubting myself and wondering if I would even be able to create milk? When Malakai was finally born after 28 hours of labor I was exhausted. I never breastfed before. The first 48 hours were tough. Malakai had a tongue tie and I had flat nipples and latching just seemed impossible. At our first pediatrician appointment I was told I needed to supplement because Malakai was losing too much weight and that devastated me, I thought that meant I only could give formula until I figured out the whole breastfeeding thing. I felt so defeated not being able to follow the plan I had out for myself. I called my midwife @lamidwifeabby crying and she told me to pump my milk and supplement through syringe feeding. Nash and I slowly dropped milk in Malakais mouth every three hours. I was so tired and thoughts of giving up crossed my mind but I was determined to breastfeed. I couldn’t figure out my pump so I hand pumped. I finally decided I needed help and hired a lactation consultant @lalactation she taught me how to latch, positions to optimize breastfeeding, weighed Malakai before and after feeding to make sure he was getting enough milk, and these tools empowered me. As I was finally getting the hang up breastfeeding my body started to ache, I was developing mastitis from not feeding off of my left boob as much. I had to take warm showers, have hot compresses applied to my chest, drink lots of water, massage my breast and empty it while taking care of a newborn with a aching body. Finally I started to feel like myself again. *continued in comments*
